At almost the precise mid-point of the 1,900 year-old Hadrian's Wall, an ancient stone's throw from Mile Castle 39 of 80, a natural dip in the landscape provides a striking shelter for one of Britain's most famous and cherished ancient trees. The sycamore of Sycamore Gap is estimated to be hundreds of years old and rocketed to stardom in cultural circles when the location featured in an early scene of the Kevin Costner classic "Robin Hood Prince Of Thieves", earning it the nickname of "The Robin Hood Tree".

A Google search will bring up an array of the thousands of photographs taken of the location, most of which evoke an air of mystery and wilderness. However, the Gap is just a 15 minute walk from a nearby car park, from which you can either follow Hadrian's Wall directly, which involves a couple of steep ups and downs, or you can walk along a much gentler farmer's track - just remember your wellies if it's a little wet underfoot!

The sycamore tree was allegedly felled by vandals in September 2023. As such, we include a £1 donation to the National Trust with every sale of this ornament.
